Caregivers Support Group

Are you caring for an elderly or disabled loved one? You're a caregiver whether you devote as much as 24 hours a day or as little as 5 minutes a week to someone you care for. Join us as we explore care giving together and discuss such topics as: Maintaining the balance of the caregiver, Solving care giving problems, Learning from the experience of others and discovering additional available resources. Sponsored by the Caregiver Assisted Network a program of Catholic Social Services and funded in part by the council on aging.

Care giving is defined as providing unpaid assistance and support to family members or acquaintances that have physical, psychological or developmental needs (Blackwell Reference). It may involve providing care ranging from 5 minutes a week to 24 hours a day or somewhere in between.

The caregiver may be a spouse, a parent or children in the "sandwich Generation" e.g.taking care of their own children and their parents, or a dear friend. As a caregiver you are asked to juggle several roles within a day.

A psychologist noted that people who are giving to others should be in a relationship with other giving people. Some caregivers give until they can give no more, believing that this is what God is asking of them. We pray and ask God to help us, but the answer to our prayers maybe that we should utilize the resources God has put into our lives. God wants to take care of ALL of us.

When we allow others to support us, we will find we can do much more in supporting and encouraging those receiving our care. An effective caregiver requires acknowledging the joys and pains of caring for someone.

Caregivers need care too. Consider attending one of our CAREGIVER Support Group sessions and let us help by listening to others in similar situations, sharing ideas, and learning about community resources available to Support you as a caregiver.

Caregiving Articles from the Caregiver Assistance Network

Attached are several articles with some good insights on caregiving from the Caregiver Assistance Network.

  1. Who Cares?

Family members and volunteers provide some 90% of all home care in the U.S. to those who are ill, fragile or disabled. In Hamilton County alone, an estimated 100,000 persons are caring on a regular basis for a relative or friend – many of these 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
