Changes to the Mass

A Reflection in Preparation for the New Roman Missal

As we enter into the process of formation for the reception of the Roman Missal, we also embark upon a journey of liturgical and spiritual renewal, a time to engage our hearts and minds more deeply on the mystery of Christ in the celebration of the Eucharist. The Worship Office, assisted by the Archdiocesan Worship Commission and Roman Missal Sub-Committee, and in collaboration with other diocesan offices, will work very hard to assist parishes with the various elements of formation for children, youth, adults, the elderly and professional staffs. Thus, our recommended programs and resources will be broad and specific in nature, focused on deepening our appreciation and experience of the Eucharist and on the various changes found in the Third Edition of the Roman Missal.

An Important Message about the New Mass Translation

In order to help all Catholics in the archdiocese better prepare for the implementation of the beautiful new translations of the Roman Missal, in Advent of this year, Archbishop Schnurr has given permission to begin using the Ordinary parts of the Mass before Advent. The Ordinary consists of the Glory to God, the Holy, Holy, Holy, the Memorial Acclamation, and the Lamb of God.

The Glory to God has the most changes in text. The changes in other parts are far fewer. We here at St. Gertrude’s will be introducing the new texts at all Masses on the weekend of October 8-9. Have no fear! You are not expected to know all the new words when you get to Mass on those dates! There will be pew cards ready and waiting for you with both the musical setting and the words. We have chosen to begin with a very simple, yet beautiful musical setting and one that you are already familiar with called "Mass of the Patriarchs." You have been hearing and singing this for the last few weeks so all that will be necessary is for you to follow along with the pew card and sing the new words. We hope to make this a smooth and easy transition. As we all gain familiarity and comfort with the new words we will, over the upcoming months, learn other musical settings and increase our repertoire, as a parish.

Nicene Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen.
We believe
in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one in Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered, died, and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in fulfillment of the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.
He has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.
I believe
in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages.
God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.
I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.
Amen.

Preparing for the New Translation The Complete Collection of Bulletin Inserts

For the past several weeks, we have provided a weekly insert on Preparing for the New Translations.  Prepared by Fr. Allen Moran, O.P., these inserts have gone in depth explaining the meaning behind the new translations of the ordinary part of the Mass.  Their purpose is to assist all Catholics in obtaining a deeper understanding of the Mass texts, so that they might more fully attain the Second Vatican Council's goal of a fuller and more actual participation in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.  Below are the links for these various inserts.  We will also continue to post on the website the text of these inserts in the weeks to come.
