The St. Gertrude Parish Boosters is an organization that provides an opportunity for the children of the parish to participate in organized Catholic sports programs.
5th & 6th Grade Football SportsLeader Commitment Ceremony
All parents who have paid the Boosters registration fee are members of the Boosters. Currently, we are finishing up girls’ volleyball and boys’ basketball seasons and are getting ready to start baseball, softball, and track and field seasons. Please check the bulletin on a regular basis for information about how to become a member of Boosters and have your children participate in diocesan-wide sports programs.
Jayne O’Neill Tourney
Jayne O'Neill was a loving mother of three wonderful girls and loving wife of Tim O'Neill. She had a passion for life, for family, and for St. Gertrude. All three girls are proud graduates of St. Gertrude School. Jayne was taken from us early, but she is not forgotten and is remembered and honored with the Jayne O'Neil Memorial Basketball Tournament.
This tournament hosts up to 60 local girls basketball teams participating over a two week period for grades 3rd to 8th. This is our only fundraiser for boosters. Proceeds from the Jayne O'Neil tournament help fund all of the sports programs in the parish! In the last few years, boosters have purchased new uniforms for all sports with the exception of boy's basketball which will be replaced this year. Boosters also purchases new balls and equipment every year for our parish sports teams. Tournament runs Aug8-21 and is held at St. Gertrude Gym and Madeira Middle School.
SportsLeader
The purpose of SportsLeader is to assist sports programs in development of the entire person of the participants, particularly in teaching values that have universal benefit to the players on the field, off the field, and throughout their life and to teach them tools to transform those values into virtues. Recognizing the unique role and influence coaches have with participants, Sports Leader provides a systematic method to assist coaches in developing their teams into the best possible individual persons and players they can be.

Bulldog Football Parents:
The 2013 Bulldog football season is on the horizon! With it brings growth of the Bulldog football family and some changes that the Football Coordinators and the Booster Board believe will strengthen the Bulldog football program for years to come. For at least this season, and hopefully more to come, the St. Gertrude Bulldog football program will be a merged entity with the St. Andrew/St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Titans. All merged teams will be known as the St. Gertrude/St. Andrew/St. Elizabeth Ann Seton "Bulldogs" for purposes of the GCYL and will wear the blue and gold uniforms and golden dome helmets that St. Gertrude has worn for the last several years. We will simply refer to ourselves as “Bulldog Football”. We have merged the logos of the respective programs and intend to carry forward some internal traditions from both programs, including pre-season conditioning, Program Spirit Shirts, SportsLeader, Titan “T” awards, Family Kick-off Night, and more. Further, all home games will be held at Madeira High School Stadium as they have for the last few years, preserving our status as having one of the best game-day facilities in the league. Coaching staffs for at least the Pony, Reserve, and Varsity will be combined with coaches from both programs, similar to last year’s composition. The Bandit coach mix is still to be fully determined, but the Pastors of both St. Andrew and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton have agreed with their respective participation in the Bandit program to facilitate participation by more families. As a result, we may have SASEAS parents assisting with the Bandits. The head Bandit coach will remain Andrew Tallarigo and most of his staff returns. The head Pony coach will remain John Gruber. The head Reserve coach will remain Juan Lewis. The head Varsity coach will be determined in the next 3 to 4 weeks as Greg Tkacz’s work schedule will unfortunately (for us) keep him from continuing to serve in that role. We are hopeful however, that Greg will stay on in an assistant coaching role and we expect that much of last year’s Varsity coaching staff will return as well. If any parent is interested in coaching on the Varsity Staff or desires to be considered for the Head Varsity Coach position, they need to contact Craig Coburn as soon as possible.
We are still in need of volunteers/nominations for open positions. Please consider volunteering your time or if you know someone that would fit the role please nominate them. Send information to Daniel.hartung@bankatfirst.com Open positions include: secretary, volleyball coordinators, football coordinator, and concession coordinator

On Monday night, January 21, 2013 at 7 pm, the St. Gertrude Athletic Boosters will make a decision regarding the continuation and formalization of 2012’s merged Football squads with St. Andrew / St. Elizabeth Ann Seton (SASEAS) into 2013 and beyond. The Boosters commissioned a separate committee composed of Board members, coaches, and interested parent volunteers who met over the last 3.5 months to review the 2012 operations and to investigate the feasibility of continuing the merger with SASEAS to preserve the character and competitiveness of Bulldog Football for years to come. More details regarding the committee, its process, its recommendations, and the merger proposal itself are outlined in the attached. All interested parents are welcome to attend the Meeting to be held in the Holy Grille on January 21 at 7 pm.
Every new coach at St. Gertrude’s is required to participate in a New Coach Training for the SportsLeader Virtue Program that has been incorporated into all athletics at the parish. For your convenience, these trainings are being offered once per month. If you plan to coach this year, or in the future, please attend one of these sessions in 2013 (training for each date will take place in the Parish Center from 7-8pm):
- January 9
- February 13
- March 6
- April 10
- May 10
