Brand Identity

Companies and organizations, big and small, establish brands in order to ensure a consistent look and feel across all of their communications. At St. Gertrude, we have the same desire. We want our communications to maintain a certain standard of excellence.

This resource page will serve as a guide for those of you who are responsible for St. Gertrude associated ministries, apostolates, organizations, etc. Together, we can maintain a consistent, cohesive, and effective visual identity.

At St. Gertrude, our branding contains unique visual components (fonts, colors, and graphics) for the School and the Church. Please download and reference our style guide whenever creating communications for the Church, School or any associated entity, ministry or organization.
St. Gertrude Style Guide

Colors

St. Gertrude's primary colors are black, gold, and blue as shown below. Whether in print or digital, these colors should be dominant.

Electronic displays (LCD screens, CRT monitors, etc.) may display colors slightly different than in print. Gold is a particularly challenging color. However, by following the specifications below we can maintain consistency.

Logos

Primary Logo

The St. Gertrude Church brand uses several important logos. Each one has a specific role and function. This brief guide will help you select the appropriate graphics for your communications.

St. Gertrude Church Logo (Primary Logo)

This logo may appear in full color (black and gold), or in all black or all white. This strategic use of color establishes a consistent and effective visual impact and immediate visual association with the church. There are also two variations of the logo (horizontal or vertical), which are both acceptable and provide the necessary flexibility to accommodate aesthetic demands.

Subsidiary Logos

St. Gertrude Church organizations or ministries may also have need of their own logo. We require organizations that are associated with the Church to use the black and gold logo color scheme. Organizations and ministries that are organized, operated, and managed by St. Gertrude Church or School can request a logo by contacting Brad Bursa,
Executive Director of Evangelization and Communications at bbursa@stgertrude.org.

Logos cannot be generated by any group affiliated
with St. Gertrude without the express consent of the Executive Director.

Additional Graphic Elements

The Dominican Shield

The logo shield can be used on its own in black or white.
Picture
A note on the elements of the Dominican Shield:
  • Four white and four black triangles symbolize the unity of people working together for the common good.
  • Cross fleury (cross with a fleur de lis, that is, a lily at each end) signifies victory, duty, self-sacrifice, and chastity.
  • Sable or black symbolizes wisdom, silence, fortitude, and penance.
  • White signifies peace, purity, charity, and sincerity.
  • “Veritas” means “truth” in Latin. The Dominicans are committed to preaching the truth of Jesus Christ today as ever.
The Bulldog

The St. Gertrude Bulldog is the official mascot of St. Gertrude athletics and should be used only in official athletic communications, apparel, etc. The Bulldog graphic may be used in full body or head only. The Gold Bulldog graphic is preferred.
A note on the symbolism of the bulldog:
Fr. Ezra Sullivan, O.P. notes that “when St. Dominic's mother, Blessed Jane of Aza, was pregnant, she had a dream of a dog with a torch in its mouth, running around the world and setting everything on fire. She went to the monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos and asked a monk what it meant. He replied that the child in her womb would be a great preacher, who would set the world ablaze with the fire of his words.” The word “Dominican” is a play on the Latin, Domini canes, which means “dogs of the Lord.”
